“Help! I Need a Website!”

About

Technology and computers are often a frustrating, confusing, and expensive part of doing business for writers.

I’m here to help.

This site will help you set up and maintain your own professional website (without overpaying) and answer questions like:

“How do I get a domain name?”
“What should I look for in a hosting company?”
“How do I set up an email list?”
“What are HTML and CSS?”
“How do I set up automated backups?”
“ACK! My website got hacked! Now what?!”

(And I’ll discuss online promotion, because that’s what everyone wants to know about, but it’s not my primary focus. An excellent resource on self-promotion for writers, online and off, is JA Konrath’s A Newbie’s Guide to Publishing.)

I’ll also answer general computer questions like “How do I get rid of spyware?” and “How do I back up my work?” and “What kind of laptop should I buy?”

And if that’s not enough, I’ll also answer questions specific to writers like “What software is out there that will help me outline my novel?” and “What’s the best screenwriting software?” and “I’m trying to submit a story electronically, but it’s coming out garbled! Help!”

I’m just a seething mass of information.

Conduct

There are just a few rules that I ask everyone to follow, to help keep the site a pleasant, informative place to be:

  • No pushing commercial services. Shilling is annoying and detracts from the information exchange. If you offer a relevant service, mention it in your bio, don’t promote it in the comments.
  • No affiliate links. I don’t, and I’d appreciate it if you don’t. If you love the product or service, by all means tell other people about it, but recommend it on its own merits. A recommendation that comes with a 15% perk for the recommender is suspect.
  • And of course: treat your fellow users with respect.

Comments that violate the above will be removed.
